Installation of an overhead conveyor in a Paris theater

Overhead conveyors are used in a wide variety of sectors. Industry is generally the main area in which these handling systems are integrated, but it’s not the only one. Stage directors also use overhead conveyor systems to suspend various elements for theatrical productions. The theater’s high ceilings make it easy to integrate these suspended rails. Technimanut recently worked with an artistic project designer on the staging of Fashion Week 2024 in a famous Parisian theater.

Air conveyors at the service of the entertainment industry

A few weeks ago, an event creator came to our team with a specific wish: to organize a show during which the various actors would be suspended in mid-air.

To mark the launch of Fashion Week, our client wanted to bring a unique show to life on the Trianon stage in Paris. The theme of the project speaks for itself: “All Up In The Air”.  To bring the show to life, the artistic production agency wanted to hang giant hands weighing 23 kg above the mannequins. The idea was to give the illusion, via cotton threads, that the supermodels were not humans but puppets.

In addition to being unusual, this aerial handling request had to be handled quickly. Our team had 5 weeks to study, design and install the rail system to suspend the show’s set.

After analyzing our customer’s technical requirements, our staff moved on to the design stage. This involved a trip to Paris to :

– Evaluate the available space and measure the dimensions of the Trianon stage;

– Determine the weight and dimensions of sets and props to be transported and hung;

– Define the routes to be followed by the conveyor, in order to ensure the smooth running of the show. The giant hands had to be stored behind a stage curtain, in order to keep the scenery as a surprise for the audience.

In the end, our teams came up with a twin-rail conveyor 20 meters long by 6 meters wide (with an 8-meter-long storage area), for a total rail length of 49.5 meters! Thanks to an automated system, the Technimanut bi-rail conveyor was able to transport up to 50 kg of scenery per spreader! In all, 200 kg of sets were suspended above the stage. This overhead handling system enabled the giant hands to advance at a rate of 42 meters per minute, ensuring that they kept pace with the mannequins.

An extraordinary setting, as if suspended in time

The installation of the guide rails, the control system and the setting of the speed parameters all ensured that the show went off without a hitch. Our team remained on site for the duration of the rehearsals and performance, to provide maintenance if necessary.

Setting up this aerial conveyor in the famous Parisian theater was a real challenge for our team! Our technicians had to coordinate their work with the event’s various service providers (sound, lighting and set technicians, etc.). The special conditions of the show business world meant that our experts had to assemble the aerial handling system in a record 4 hours!

By the end of the show, the 49.5-meter ephemeral conveyor had been dismantled in just 3 hours! In all, the bi-rail conveyor was installed in the theater for 4 days, and was in use for 10 minutes during the spectacular show orchestrated by artist Colm Dillane, founder of KidSuper
